Mapei publishes coverage charts for every grout product, but they’re scattered across PDFs and tucked into the back of installation guides. This calculator runs Mapei’s official coverage formula for any tile size and joint width — so you can order the right number of bags the first time.
How Mapei calculates grout coverage
The standard formula Mapei (and most grout manufacturers) use is:
That covers the geometry of how much joint volume exists per square foot of tile. The bigger the tile, the less grout you need per square foot — joints take up less area. Wider joints, thicker tiles, and smaller tiles all increase grout consumption.
Why this matters
Mapei grout isn’t cheap. A 25 lb bag of Ultracolor Plus FA runs $35–$50 at most tile distributors. Over-ordering by 50% on a big job is real money — and on a 200 sq ft kitchen with 12×12 tile, the difference between guessing and calculating is often 1–2 full bags.
What changes coverage the most
The biggest variable is tile size. Going from 12×12 to 24×24 tile cuts grout consumption roughly in half because there’s half as much joint length per square foot. Joint width is the second biggest — doubling joint width nearly doubles grout consumption. Tile thickness matters but less; standard 3/8" porcelain and 1/4" ceramic don’t differ enough to change your bag count.
| Tile size | Joint | Coverage (per 25 lb bag) |
|---|---|---|
| 4" × 4" | 1/8" | ~50 sq ft |
| 6" × 6" | 1/8" | ~75 sq ft |
| 12" × 12" | 1/8" | ~150 sq ft |
| 18" × 18" | 1/8" | ~225 sq ft |
| 24" × 24" | 1/8" | ~300 sq ft |
| 12" × 12" | 1/16" | ~300 sq ft |
| 12" × 12" | 1/4" | ~75 sq ft |
These are rough — the calculator above gives exact numbers for your specific tile.
Mapei products this works for
This formula is accurate for all of Mapei’s cementitious grouts:
- Ultracolor Plus FA (most popular — fast-setting, stain-resistant, joint 1/16"–3/4")
- Keracolor U (unsanded, joints under 1/8")
- Keracolor S (sanded, joints 1/8"–1/2")
- Kerapoxy CQ (epoxy — same formula but expect slightly higher consumption due to viscosity)
For Flexcolor CQ (pre-mixed acrylic), Mapei publishes its own coverage chart — pre-mixed grout has a different volumetric basis and this calculator over-estimates by ~15%. Use Mapei’s product page for Flexcolor specifically.
Mixing tip that affects coverage
If you over-water your grout (a common mistake on the first batch), it shrinks more as it cures and looks recessed in the joints. The calculator assumes you mix to Mapei’s spec — typically 0.85–1.0 quart of water per 25 lb bag for Ultracolor Plus FA. Stick to the cooler-side of the water range and let it slake for 5 minutes before re-mixing and applying.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this Mapei calculator?
The math uses Mapei's published coverage formula — the same one printed on every bag of Ultracolor Plus FA, Keracolor U, and Keracolor S. We add a 10% waste factor by default to account for spillage and partial bags. Coverage varies slightly by exact product, so check the bag for the official chart before ordering large quantities.
Which Mapei grout should I use?
Ultracolor Plus FA is the most common — fast-setting, stain-resistant, no sealing required, joints 1/16" to 3/4". Keracolor U is sanded for joints 1/8" to 1/2". Keracolor S is sanded for wider joints up to 1/2". Flexcolor CQ is pre-mixed (no water needed) for small jobs.
How big should my grout joints be?
Standard joints are 1/8" for most wall and floor tile, 3/16"–1/4" for natural stone, and 1/16" for rectified porcelain. Wider joints look more "handmade" but use significantly more grout — a 1/4" joint uses 2× the grout of a 1/8" joint.
Should I buy 10% extra?
Yes. Always order at least one extra bag beyond the calculation. Mapei grout is sold in 10 lb and 25 lb bags. If your calculated need is 12 lbs, buy a 25 lb bag — the price difference is small and you'll have backup for repairs.
Does sanded vs unsanded matter for the calculation?
Coverage is roughly the same per pound, but unsanded grout (Keracolor U for narrow joints under 1/8") goes further on small joints, while sanded grout fills wider joints more economically. The calculator uses an average — check the specific product spec sheet for joints over 1/4" or under 1/16".
